Ratricharya: The Night Regimen

After working all day long, we expect to get back home and relax. But wait….did you read the title correctly? A night regimen too????

YES!

Relaxation is a very important part of life, so how could Ayurveda miss out on describing ways to help us relax and rejuvenate better.

Night, the 12 hours between 6:00pm to 6:00am if regulated by a proper Ratricharya relieves us of the daily life stresses and prepares us for a smooth transition into the next day. This regimen can be concised and understood through the following points:

  1. Sandhya / Dusk, when the sun has just set, is the time when heavier or negative energies are at their peak. Thus, one needs to be careful and avoid indulging in food, sexual activity, sleep, reading and walking at this specific time.
  2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper“. The night meal / supper should thus be less in quantity, easy for digestion and consumed atleast 2 hours prior to bedtime. Since the maximum permissible time limit for going to bed is 10:00pm; hence, make sure to finish your dinner by 8:00pm.
  3. The night meal should be followed by activities mentioned under “What to do After Food?! “.
  4. Night is meant for complete rest. Hence, it is recommended to use a comfortable bed and go to sleep by 10:00pm (read more in “Nidra: The Sleep Pattern“). Proper night sleep destroys half the diseases, assists digestion of food, enhances nourishment of the body and allows natural rejuvenation of each ‘n’ every cell.
