The first season in adaanakaala is “SHISHIRA” or late winter which begins around 15th January and lasts upto 15th March. According to the Indian calendar it covers the months of magha and phalgun.
This season is characterised by excessive cold and dryness with kapha dosha being in sanchaya avastha. The physical strength and digestive capacity are at their peak which enables one to indulge in rigorous physical activity and digest even heavier foods with ease.
However, consumption of light and cold food items predominant of pungent, bitter and astringent tastes are contraindicated during shishira ritu. Intake of less food, excessive exposure to winds and all the factors that aggravate vata should also be avoided.
Details of food, regimen and therapeutic procedures to be followed during this season will be discussed in “Shishira Ritucharya – II.”
