Does Ayurveda say yes to smoking?!
Indeed it does! And that too as a part of your daily regimen.
Surprised?…. Wait till you read ahead!
The ill effects of smoking are no longer a mystery, but the number of smokers (active / passive) still continue to multiply everyday. Apart from giving you a high or a kick the substances you inhale don’t just affect your lungs but, your entire body. However, can there be smoking practices which have effects totally opposite to what we know? Can smoking be healthy?
Dhumapana / Inhalation of medicated fumes / Herbal smoking is mentioned as both a preventive and therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda especially for diseases affecting the upper part of the body and due to imbalance of kapha – vata dosha. It involves the inhalation of medicated fumes first through the mouth, then the nose and letting it out only through the mouth (letting out smoke through the nose is harmful for the eyes).
Although a big list of drugs is available for making herbal smokes, the most congenial would be to apply ghee and turmeric powder over a gauze piece / thin cotton cloth, roll it into a wick, burn it and inhale the smoke it yields through a funnel.
Conventional herbal smoking combats heaviness of head, headaches, rhinitis, sinusitis, migraine, disorders of ear, disorders of eye, cough, asthma, soar throat, disorders of oral cavity, weak teeth, anorexia, stiffness of neck, itching, disorders of throat, disorders of nose, greying of hair, hair fall, alopecia, sneezing, lethargy, mental disorders and excessive sleep. It clears the upper respiratory tract & the mind, lightens the head, renders clear speech and provides strength to all the sense organs.
Dhumapana however, has a few contraindications hence, it is advisable to consult an Ayurvedic Physician and learn the authentic way of practicing it before you adopt it as a part of your daily routine.
So, quit smoking tobacco / weed; instead, smoke your way to health!
