Mouth; the first portion of our digestive system which receives food and produces saliva is also undoubtedly a victim to attack by microorganisms. Oral problems can start with a bad breath and gradually worsen into dental caries, gingivitis etc and become a risk factor for serious systemic diseases. Hence, oral hygiene becomes inevitable for the maintenance of proper health.
Ayurveda advises the use of materials which are katu (pungent), tikta (bitter) and kashaya (astringent) in taste for cleaning of mouth, eg: arka (Calotropis gigantea), nyagrodha (Ficus benghalensis), khadira (Acacia catechu), karanja (Pongamia pinnata), arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) etc. Plant twigs, powder of herbs or even toothpastes with the above mentioned tastes and plants can be used for this purpose avoiding any injury to the gums.
Brushing of teeth (danta dhavana) should be followed by scraping of tongue (jihwa nirlekhana) using a blunt and curved metallic scraper or plant twigs.
Everyone must take up cleaning of mouth atleast twice a day i.e morning and evening, however brushing after every meal remains optional. Practising this on a daily basis eliminates bad breath, removes inability to perceive taste, clears off oral sludge, promotes interest in eating and enhances taste perception.
Oral Health = Overall Health
