The title of this post might sound controversial, irrelevant and unacceptable to many, but “Brahmacharya” is explained under the 3 Pillars of Health and hence is as essential as food or sleep for the maintenance of health at all 4 levels.
The question here is; do we really understand what “Brahmacharya” means??….Probably not!
“Brahmacharya” can be understood in 2 ways.
The first understanding focuses on controlled sexual activity or celibacy with the aim of protecting the shukra which is considered as the essence of all the food we consume. Sustenance of shukra in the body thus helps in maintaining optimum levels of bodily tissues and promotes longevity of life.
However, the lesser known second understanding talks about developing conduct like that of Lord Brahma.
We are a part of Brahma or rather, we ourselves are Brahma; and hence our conduct too should be like him. All religions, holy texts, Ayurveda and Yoga talk of nothing else but this. In brief Ayurevda and Yoga have explained this under Achaara Rasayana and Yama-Niyama respectively practising which we can initiate our journey towards holistic health.
